Members of the South Carolina Upstate Mycological Society meet monthly on the first Monday of the month.  Meetings start at 6:30 pm.  The format of the meetings is intended to be casual and social.  We typically have a speaker who gives a presentation on a mycological topic of his or her choice, and also discuss recent fungal finds, arrange the upcoming foray, work on identifying specimens, etc. All levels of knowledge are welcome.

SCUMS  Foray at the Clemson Experimental Forest!

This  Sunday SCUMS will hold a foray at the Clemson Experimental Forest.

What: Foray

When:  Sunday, October 2 2011, 9:00 am

Where: We will meet at the South Carolina Botanical Garden, by the red caboose, and then car pool to the Clemson Experimental Forest. If using a GPS device, you may need to use the address 102 Garden Trail.
Directions and a map can be found here.

Afterwards we will go to Mellow Mushroom for drinks, lunch and mushroom ID.

Oct 3, 2011 Dr. Cameron Currie from the University of Wisconsin-Madison will present a talk entitled "Ants, agriculture, and antibiotics". He has done extensive research with the charismatic leaf-cutter ant and the quadripartite association between fungus-growing ants, their fungal cultivars, mutualistic bacteria, and specialized garden pathogens. For more information (check out the ant cam!) go to http://currielab.wisc.edu/

When: Monday 3 October. Meeting starts at 6:30PM, arrive anytime after 6:00 for specimen ID's, specific questions, and socializing.

Afterwards, those of us interested will head to the Mellow Mushroom (where else?) for dinner and drinks.

Where: GO1 Kinard on the Clemson University campus. Here's a link to a campus map. Kinard is off of Highway 93/Old Greenville Highway: Turn onto Parkway Drive and go straight through the stop sign, or you can turn onto Calhoun Dive and turn left at the stop sign.

You need a parking pass to park on campus, even if you park at a visitor meter. We'll have 10 parking passes (this is the maximum that we can get) available at the meeting for members. But don’t fear. More parking passes are available. Please visit this page for more information on how to get a parking pass. With it you can park in any green/employee parking space, except the 'reserved 24 hr' spots; if you park where there is a meter you still need to add money.

Nov 7, 2011 Woodland Mushroom Cultivation

Methods for log, stump, and wood  chip cultivation will be covered in detail by Tradd Cotter of Mushroom Mountain.
